Learn to Sail: Cruise Low Country’s Scenic Waters

Experience the thrill of learning to sail all by yourself in one of our 8 or 10 ft Bauer Sailing Dinghies.

Designed and crafted nearby, these little boats are some of the most stable and easy to learn sailboats ever built, but always loads of fun. End the day off by learning the "ropes" as we sail the Liahona, our 38' Catalina Sailboat that serves as our mothership on the days sailing adventures. Warning - Sailing can be addicting!

The adventure begins from a private dock on Saint Helena Island where everyone will climb aboard the Liahona (our big sailboat) and we'll have our 2 classic Bauer sailing dinghies, as well as our inflatable Zodiac all in tow behind the big boat. We will then motor the sailboat for approximately 2 miles on the beautiful Eddings Creek surrounded by miles of salt marsh and wildlife such as herons, otters and of course dolphins.

After 20 minutes on Eddings Creek we will enter the much larger Morgan river at the edge of the St. Helena Sound and we will head a mile or so to a Sand bar just off of Morgan Island (Morgan Island is famous for its thousands of rhesus monkeys, we occasionally can spot them on the beach).

We'll drop anchor in the deep water just beside the sandbar and will use the Zodiac to make the 40 yard journey to the beach along with the sailing dinghies. We will pull the three boats ashore and spend 30 minutes to an hour learning all the different parts of the sailboats and how they work, the principles of sailing theory and how to stay in control and safe. Then for all those who want to participate, you can start to sail.

Captain Barry will first accompany everyone individually in the 10' sailing dinghy for some one on one hands on training, teaching you basic sailing technique and making sure you feel comfortable and in control. We will remain just a few yards from the beach the entire time we're learning. After everyone has a turn sailing with the sailing instructor you will then have the opportunity take turns sailing solo in the 2 sailing dinghies. The captain will stay behind you in the Zodiac at all times in case you have any problems or want to call it quits and can't get back to the beach.

The sandbar is about 1/2 mile long and 50 yards wide at low tide and is surrounded by birds and dolphins and other wildlife.

It's great to place to explore or just relax when not in the boats. If there are members of the group that are too young or not down for learning how to sail, it's a really cool place to play and hangout.

After a couple of hours of sailing the small boats on the sand bar, everyone will get back on the big boat where you can continue the sailing experience by learning some of the basics of sailing a large sailboat all while enjoying the stunning beauty of the Saint Helena Sound.
